Mobile Relocation Founder, Bridget Romanes recently spent time in the US meeting with Americans relocating to New Zealand and publicising New Zealand’s Active Investor Plus (AIP) investor migrant programme.
In this blog Bridget shares her recent experiences while testing out three key strategies that Mobile Relocation uses to support clients in successfully adjusting to life in New Zealand.
Relocation Strategy 1 - Maintain your traditions, and consider adding a local spin.
My New York take on International Women’s Day was a 4-hour walk honouring the female artists, writers and activists of Manhattan with my local walking buddies Shorewalkers Inc.
Not only did I meet friendly New Yorkers who shared my interest in walking, I also gained a different perspective for my annual celebration of IWD.
In particular, I enjoyed learning about the role of female philanthropists and activists in the cultural life of Manhattan, historically well below the radar, but now being recognised.
Made me curious to know about comparable women in NZ’s recent history.
Relocation Strategy 2 - Use the changing seasons to mark how far you've come.
Close to where I stay in NY is the Highline, which provides my daily fix of nature in the city. In July when I last visited it was bursting with greenery, now the vegetation is in winter mode.
Time has passed, and 6 months later I feel much more familiar with New York. Daily coffee spot confirmed. I understand the neighbourhoods of this densely populated city which is so different from the sprawl of Auckland. I'm on my way to mastering public transport.
Relocating requires significant relearning, but it does happen faster than you think sometimes!
Relocation strategy 3 - Leverage your networks to feel at home.
Prior to visiting San Francisco I used LinkedIn to find and reconnect with a flatmate from my university days, Stuart Drummond, now a Med Device CFO, who has lived in the Bay Area for many years.
Stu was kind enough to pick me up from the airport, and it was so nice to be met by a familiar face in a new city.
After a stimulating week of continually meeting new people and forging new relationships, dinner with my old friend was relaxing and fun as we picked up on our shared past.
In today’s globalised world, there will be people you know everywhere. It’s worth putting in the effort to track them down!
Kia ora and welcome to New Zealand!
