Typically the majority of our investor migrant and private clients have chosen to relocate to Auckland as New Zealand's largest city.
But that is changing.
In the last 6 months we've seen Christchurch growing in popularity. While Kiwis know about that city's amazing lifestyle, near-new infrastructure and buoyant economy, we wanted to see the city and its attributes through international eyes.
So we invited our client, Charles Herring to explain why he chose Christchurch as the place to set up his life and business in New Zealand.
Thanks Charles for sharing the following.
Moving to New Zealand might seem daunting at first, especially when it comes to choosing the perfect place to settle. Over six weeks, we explored 15 unique locations and drove more than 5,000 kilometers—completing two memorable trips across the Cook Strait. Nearly every destination had its own charm, but Christchurch ultimately captured our hearts for a range of compelling reasons.
One of the most attractive features of Christchurch is its excellent transportation system. Unlike the bustling North Island cities, Christchurch enjoys significantly lighter traffic, even during rush hours. The well-planned bike lanes and well distributed e-scooters make it remarkably easy to explore the city without the stress of congestion.
Walking through Christchurch is a delightful experience. Whether ambling through the serene botanic gardens or enjoying a scenic stroll along the Avon River from Hagley Park to New Regent Street in the CBD, the city’s pedestrian-friendly paths are endlessly inviting. The nearby cafes, restaurants, and shops add a lively, community-driven vibe to every corner, and we barely scratched the surface of the delightful spots available during our two-and-a-half-week stay.
A short drive from the city center brings you to the breathtaking Sumner Beach, where the clean, pristine sands meet the sparkling Pacific Ocean. The picturesque setting, enhanced by charming boutiques and inviting restaurants, creates a mini oasis that feels like a permanent retreat from the everyday.
As my wife is Japanese, we were especially pleased to find a selection of Japanese stores throughout Christchurch, which made her feel wonderfully at home. Moreover, we appreciated having access to all the familiar groceries and products we’re used to in the United States, ensuring that every day felt both comfortable and familiar.
Christchurch impresses with its beautiful architecture and impeccably maintained public spaces, creating an atmosphere that is both safe and welcoming. Every neighborhood exudes a sense of community and care, making us feel secure no matter where we went.
From a professional perspective, setting up our offices here has proven to be a fantastic decision. The University of Canterbury’s strong computer science program—with its extensive practical training—provides an ideal environment for nurturing innovative talent. In addition, forward-thinking initiatives like the Ministry of Awesome are actively boosting the startup ecosystem in Christchurch and throughout the country.
Finally, the summer weather during our stay was wonderfully pleasant, and the winter forecasts are far more inviting than the harsh winters we’re accustomed to back in Chicago. Christchurch offers an inspiring blend of convenience, natural beauty, and innovative energy—a truly exciting place to call home.
Kia ora and welcome to New Zealand!
